My first post!

I'm really not a "coin guy," but I was lured to a local estate sale auction that was liquidating quite an extensive coin collection. My purpose in going was to pick up some things on the cheap to sell on ebay. One thing that caught my attention was a 1937 Buffalo nickel on a dime planchet. I researched it when I got home and realized it could be quite valuable. My research indicated that the weight on this coin should be 2.5 grams, however, mine is only 2.3 grams.

So, being primarily a sports collector who's industry is drowning in countless forgeries/counterfeits/reproductions, I guess I'm curious if there is any chance this thing is real? I'm guessing no, but I'll upload the pictures anyway.

Thanks for your time!

David

I think if this was a nickel/dime planchlet, some of the lettering on the edge and the desgin would be cut off from the strike not being able to fit on the coin.
Also the weight should be 5grams not 2.5 grams...

Looks like a normal circulated Buffalo to me.

I think the diameter looks about right for a nickel. With the low weight I would say it is a nickel that has had a long soak in acid until the weight got down to 2.3 grams.

Since a dime planchet is approximately half the weight of a nickel planchet, the resultant error would suffer from strike weakness and will also be missing a portion of the peripheral details.

Thanks. When I was researching I was referencing Heritage's Buffalo nickel on Dime planchet that sold for $45k who indicated the correct weight was 2.5 grams.

On a side note, I didn't pay much for this, so not a big deal. Almost everything I bought at the auction was PCGS graded already except this one. I couldn't resist the gamble I guess.

I learn something every day.
