The slope of the "7" appears to be thicker than usual...I am not certain on any "tale-tell" signs of the 17/18.

Some others with more experience should chime in anytime.

This may be a candidate for TPG authentication, possibly couple grand in your hand!

Beware of counterfeits! Many bogus examples exist that have the date reengraved. On all genuine overdate nickels, the top of the "8" extends halfway up into the horizontal bar of the "7." There is also a tiny die crack just above the tie on the Indian's braid. To be certain your coin is genuine, and to greatly increase its marketability, you should have it authenticated and certified as to grade by one of the independent third-party grading services such as the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) or Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). You may submit coins directly to NGC if you are a member of the American Numismatic Association ( ANA) or to PCGS if you join their PCGS Collector's Club. You may also submit your coins through an authorized dealer.

I think it's the real deal-it would probably grade VG-8

There is no doubt this is a genuine 1918/7-D Buffalo nickel. The "D" Mint Mark is in the proper position, and the die crack on the Indian's cheek is visible (however not always required to authenticate a genuine piece).

They best identifier in lower grade examples is the position of the inside loops of the "8". On a genuine 1918/7-D Buffalo nickel the upper loop will be to the left of the lower loop. On all regular 1918(P-D-S) Buffalo nickels the inside loops of the "8" ware so they appear in a vertical line.

I grade it VG-8.

No Die Crack - early die stage.

With Die Crack - notice all the other die fatigue on this later die stage.

I agree with Danester completely in this thread (unlike the other two I just commented on relating to buffalos :) but therein lies the fun)

I actually bought this coin back in 96' in a PCGS holder (paid $450). Then I cracked it out to put in my Dansco album.

So BrickellCat, what was the PCGS grade on this coin. It looks VG-8, but I would not be surprised if PCGS tagged it G-6.

Update - I did an on-site submission to NGC at the FUN show and it got a VG8. Good call CCF.

now that you posted the label I think that is a fair grade for this coin. Just being genuine would've been good enough for me. Nice coin. I need one of these varieties.
