I'm after a complete set of the 1883 Hawaiian Silvers and here's my second find. Any thoughts on grade would be greatly appreciated. Paleoguy

Not quite as familiar with grading these. My guess would be around VF-30. I am also seeing some blue/green stuff which I think might be PVC.

I say again PG that your broad collecting interests are inspiring to me ... as well as the fine coins you are continuing to show.

I have zero knowledge of the series ... but I say VF30 based on general grading principles.

I do recall an article in a recent Numismatist magazine on these 1883 Hawaiian coins ... but have recycled the mag and now forget the details.

How many coins make up the series?

That makes total sense, since Charles Barber designed the 10c, 25c, 50c, and $1 (Dala). It looks like a solid VF to me too, not sure...cleaned at some point? Is that raised metal between the wreath and the last "A" in KA AINA?

There are four available in the silver series of 1883 - the dime, quarter, half, and dollar. There is also a very rare 1851 cent coin, but I've never seen one for auction or sale... My dollar's off at NGC being graded. I would love to find a holder that would handle the four coins. I've seen a three coin Hawaiian holder but it doesn't have a puka (Hawaiian of course) for the dollar. Anyone know of a Capital or other brand that would house all four coins? PG

1st} Very nice - agree with VF-30
2nd} Get them all in the NGC slabs. Then have nickelsearcher, world's finest woodworker, http://www.finewoodcrafter.com/Biog...thhumor.html make a presentation case out of native Hawaiian Koa wood.

Great idea on the Koa Wood Holder.... The Dala is off to NGC currently, I have the quarter arriving any day and it's a science project. Looks like it may have been painted/enameled at some point and the obverse was glued to something. We'll see how acetone, BadThad Juice will reinvigorate the critter. That leaves the half to purchase so I'll be looking for a high VF/XF... I lived for six years in Hawaii back in the '70's so these are right in my collecting "comfort zone".... Next will be the early Puerto Rican silvers since I lived there several years.... PG

@Jeffrose.... I took you idea to heart (at least the concept) and bought these today - a perfect dimension to house the four coins sans holders. With four precisely drilled holes, mylar protection on both sides, and strips from the second piece around the margin, I'm thinking this is a great way to display the coins. Of course I may have to consult with the Great Commemorative/Woodworking Kahuna...
