I think you are referring to this:

http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giovanni_Cavino

Essentially they are old fakes, usually referred to as Padaun but many names exist - we often today see casts of his (and others like hims) fakes passed off as the real thing.

They are quite collectable but if you want authentic coins do not think that by buying these you are getting that.

Is this what you were referring to?

Take a look at this article by Doug Smith. The second to last paragraph explains the Paduans. As bobbyhelmet says, they are not ancients. They are actually artistic fakes of ancients. They are very collectible in their own right.

JW is right (read my page ;) ). The only problem is 99.9% of the Paduans you see are actually later casts copying the originals. Originals actually made back in the Renaissance are worth almost as much as real Romans if not more. Some of them copy medallions that you simply will not get any other way and that is exactly why they were made in the first place. Real Roman medallions are rare and there was a demand for space fillers from rich collectors 400 years ago and the decision between a nice replica and not having one of any kind was then more likely to go in favor of the copy. One popular Paduan is the sestertius of Otho. Otho issued no sestertii so if you wanted a complete set of large bronzes of the 12 Caesars, you were happy to have one (at least by old time standards).
