Going for the first time to a coin store! Do the stores usually have good prices and maybe deals on coins?

Just slightly below trends if you are lucky.Max I will go is 60% of trends, so I'm stuck with ebay, coin dealers don't sell that low.

It's fun to look around a coin store. I don't buy to often from them anymore.

My coin dealer died a few months back. I went into his shop EVERY DAY for years and eventually became friends with him (even though he was a grumpy old man and I'm 31). Still, if he ever gave me $5 dollars off a coins listed price it was like he was doing me a huge favor. Then again, he was running a brick-and-mortar store and had rent and bills to pay...AND it isn't like people were knocking down his door trying to buy rare (or even not-so-rare) coins, so I don't really blame him.

I went into a coin shop, to get some album pages. I asked the owner what coins he had in his collection, he looked at me strange and replied I dont have a coin collection I'm a coin dealer. In other words he is making a living from buying and selling.

I find coin stores to be overpriced for some reason. The same dealer will sell a coin on ebay for less than what he/she is selling it in his/her store. Which doesn't completely make sense if he/she has to give up those ebay and Paypal fees. The overhead of running the store doesn't play into it because he/she still needs that store for distributing anyways. If I was selling coins, my store prices would be slightly cheaper than ebay prices in order to encourage local people to purchase in person and save on the ebay fees. You also get people in the store more often, which might encourage more purchasing.

It really depends what coin you are looking for. It also depends what coin store you visit. I work at the RCM, and I had one client tell me she bought a Loonie for $10 when really seeing the condition it was in should of probably paid maybe $2 for it maybe $5. If you go in looking like you know what your talking about and can fight for a good bargain/deal then you might to be taken advantage of. Always best to do your research fist and find out what the real value is.
