I purchased the following item as a gift for an amateur collector from a former collector who was selling off his items. It was cheap enough that I didn't worry when he said he'd lost his paperwork and information on the item.

Iraqi-Dinar-Ca-1200Ad?

Iraqi-Dinar-Ca-1200Ad?

All I know about the coin is that it's supposed to be from Northern Iraq ca. 1200. I would love if someone could tell me more about this item.

The Zangids were the dynasty that ruled northern Iraq circa AD 1200. The branch of the family in Mosul struck gold coins, the most common being from the reign of Nasir al-Din Mahmud, AD 1219-1234. His gold coins look like this, which seems to be a reasonable match for yours in terms of style of writing and layout. However, your coin is quite well worn and/or poorly struck; I'm not sure if more precise dating is possible.

I have seen a similar gold dinar, identified as Gahznavid, of Farrukhzad 1053-59 AD. A-1633.struck at Ghazna.

Well, it seems none of you agree but they're all starting points. Thank you.
