Hi all, I have a 1975 bronze coin commemorating the Japanese imperial visit to the USA. The obverse of the coin is a picture of Emperor Hirohito and Empress Nagako of Japan. The reverse is a picture of cherry blossoms and the Capitol (picture attached). The coin is an E.R. Grove coin. How common is this coin? Does anybody have any information about it? What it might be worth, where it was made, distributed, etc.? Thank you in advance for you help. -Tom Image: bronze coin.jpg25.82 KB

Tom, Welcome to the forum.
Wish I could help you, but I have never seen this coin before.
It's a very attractive coin, or medal.
I hope someone can help you. I too will be interested to learn about it.

Thanks, Gary.
I really do hope that somebody out there knows something about the coin. I can't find any information about the coin on the internet so far. The coin really is quite beautiful though.
Happy New Year, Tom

After a bit of Googling, I think it sounds like a product of the Medallic Art Company. Their website, however, is less than helpful regarding enquiries into numbers issued and current value of their old medals: "contact a reputable coin/medallion dealer". Does anyone know if anybody's compiled a catalogue of some sort of their products? In the meantime, try doing an ebay completed items search for "E.R. Grove", category Coins, and see if anything like your medal comes up; that shgould give you a ball-parkl figure of value, anyway. My Google searching came up with a few old ebay listings of medals by the same artist/maker, http://cgi.ebay.com/General-Charles...al_W0QQitemZ330054513282QQihZ014QQcategoryZ3454QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks for the information, Sap!
I couldn't access your links for some reason. But I did want to let you know that I had gone ahead and look on e-Bay for something of the sort earlier, before I had posted. And I had found the same coin that I have (in fact, I used the picture the seller had up because my digital camera is currently on loan), but the seller did not seem to know very much about it. He/she had a starting bid of $25 and said the following:
"This is a commemorative medal coin made in bronze by famous medal-maker E. R. Grove. It is to commemorate Japanese Emporer Hirohito's imperial visit to the USA U.S.A. in 1975. The front shows H.M. Emporer Hirohito and H.M. Empress Nagako and is marked E.R. Grove PAM 1975. A real, limited rare piece. I couldn't find another on the internet while searching. A nice medal in mint near mint shape. Back says: Commemorating The Imperial Visit to The United States of America 1975 and shows the White House and some flowers presumably Cherry Blossoms. This is one nice looking medal. Paypal, Cashier's Checks, Personal Checks, and Money Orders all accepted. Shipping is $6.00 in U.S. I do combine shipping. You can't find this type of medal anymore. Don't miss your chance for an awesome rarity. Thanks for Looking!"
As you can see, there is very little information provided about the coin's history. Also, the seller incorrectly noted the White House as the reverse side picture, when it is definitely the Capitol Building (which was one of the first destinations of the imperial couple upon arriving in the US when Ford was president). Other than this, all I know is that this was the first time in history (1975)that any royal family of Japan had visited the US.
Other than this e-Bay hit, I've found nothing on the coin. I'll try to keep on investigating tomorrow.
Do let me know if you make any discoveries into the matter.
Much thanks for your help yet again!

Hmmm...perhaps it is just my computer or my poor connection right now, but I can't seem to access the link you've provided.
Additionally, for a person who has never used e-Bay before, what does BIN mean?
I'll try the link again tomorrow. It could just be that my connection right now is too slow.
Thanks for the information though, triggersmob!

Ahh, Buy It Now. I got the link to work.
Too bad there's no information about it yet again, but that is most definitely the same coin I own!
Thanks again for the help.
