Hi all, I hope I posted in the right place, so I found this coin on ebay that I'm wondering if it's what the seller says it is and if it is worth the time, I don't feel comfortable with ebay because I am really new to collecting, and I don't know the things seasoned collecters do. It appears to me as the person selling this item has no idea what they have either, it was listed to be made from silver , then the description says copper, they talk about cleaning the coins as well,. Which is a no -no. Lol. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for your time .

This is a fairly standard cupro-nickel 5 milliemes. I can't tell from the photo if it's a 1917 or 1917H (H is the Heaton mintmark)also condition is hard to judge. In England, that price might be slightly high.

With low cost things like this it is worth seeing what else he has. If you can get 10 coins for the same or slightly higher shipping costs, then it might be worth it, but you are paying half for shipping! It doesn't cost that much to send this coin to the UK from the US, postage for one coin I got was 99cents, so this is a slight problem!

It being a standard coin I could probably find a similar year at one of the 8 coin shops in my area. I just like it, for the look, not worried about value but I don't want to pay more than its really worth either. Thank you for your help.

darkdreams07 Actually the cost is very high. Typically a coin of this type which is most likely the H mint because they made over 37 million - is a $.50 cent coin - $1 TOPS. The grade of the coin is almost Fine. But I do understand the alure of buying a coin just because you love it and price does not matter.

Check out your local coin shows - most of them have one or two dealers who have foreign coins and this should be available after a relatively short search.

Ask the seller perhaps he can give a reference to some sort of clarification for this issue.

, darkdreams07!

From his comment about polishing coins, he's not a knowledgeable collector. If you really like the coin, five bucks will not be the biggest mistake you ever make, but you can prolly find it cheaper.

Coin collecting is supposed to be fun, so don't over-analyze every transaction. Pick an amount of money that won't mean skipping a meal and consider it tuition in the Skule of Hard Knox. It'll cost you a few bucks, but it'll land the occasional bargain that you might otherwise pass on.
