I switched from a raynox dcr-250 to a raynox dcr-150 and what a difference it made. I was able to move the coin further from the camera and move the lights more straight down on the coin. Changed the background from black to white, don't know if that made any difference. I also made some tubes for the led lights to concentrate the light more onto the coin.

The first pic is with the dcr-250 & second with dcr-150.

No post-processing involved just crop and resize. Still have some adjusting to do, but getting closer.

I've seen a lot of people getting nice results from those Raynox add-ons; they're pretty good lenses. If you've got a local photo shop of some sort, see if you can run down an 18% Gray card - they're popular for setting white balance and would make a nice background compromise for you.
