Hey all,

I just picked this one up on ebay, it arrived today. 1894 2 Rupien- key date for the series, and forgeries are known to exist. I have 7 days to return it if its bad, so figured I'd post here to see if anyone saw something I missed. I haven't weighed it, but its silver and looks good to me, I think!

I can get better photos if required, just haven't had the time today.

Thanks again!

You are correct about this year being a target for forgers. You have to be VERY careful in examining this coin.

Look for properly formed reeds on the edge. If the reeds show split tails or lines at the mid-points it could be a forgery edged with a ring die. Also look for traces of grinding on the edges all around the edge. This is done to remove evidence of the ring method.

Weight is critical - you need to get an accurate scale. The coin looks "dead" to me. It may have been heavily cleaned or it is a casting.

The piece has definitely been cleaned (the majority of the DOA pieces I have handled have) but I could tell that before I bought it and arranged my budget accordingly. If it is a forgery, its a very good one, but I'll have it weighed tomorrow. Any idea what the weight should be?

As always swamperbob, you are a mastermind!

Fantastic explanation Swamperbob! Are the pictures illustrations from a book on coin forgery?

brokencompass The illustrations are actually my own. I did them to explain the issue and have used them on the forum before. I plan to include them in my book on C&R forgeries. Unfortunately the powers that be have nixed the idea of including discussions about "Modern Forgery" and detection methods in the Portrait Counterfeit book.
