I am just curious, for those of you who sift through thousands of coins, box by box - do any of you have 'Lowball' sets in your favourite denomination? Not damaged coins, or coins with sidewalk rash, but genuine circulation wear.
If there are any Canadian penny coin roll hunters here, I would love to touch base with you - since so many coins pass through your fingers... Low ball sets are immensely popular with collectors of US coinage. http://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/default.aspx?c=139I know of only a handful of lowball collectors of Canadian coinage, half of which collect silver dollars. I figured, logically, that perhaps some of the coin roll hunters partake in this form of coin collecting, for the fun of it. Yet, it seems to be unpopular with Canadian coinage. Small 1-cent and nickel 5-cent coins seem like a good place to start, because, unlike silver coins, they are still found in change back to the early 1940s and beyond. Perhaps I should have been more blunt - are there any lowball Canadian collections out there?

I've been roll hunting 5c for less than a year. I've pulled out several casino-nickels for the fun of it. I don't have enough of them yet to make a so-called collection though. Most of them are cupro-nickel. ~ JFK ~

Hmmm. I have never thought of putting together a Low Ball Set. As a matter of fact...I have never put together a set in general. LOL! I currently collect for the fun and love of the hobby. I keep what interests me on a personal level. Don't get me wrong...I would love to score a high dollar coin. Who wouldn't? That's not why I collect. I find it relaxes me and helps to pass the time.
I search Canadian Coinage by the box. I have 5 different banks I pick up my coins from and 3 different banks I use to dump my returns. I get coins from 5 different Banking Institutions even though I only have an account at one. From what others have said...I guess I'm kinda lucky with not having a issue with getting coins from a Bank I do not have an account with. I started Roll Searching in Oct 2009 and have gone through 113 box of cents, 64 box of nickels, 21 box of dimes and 9 box of quarters. I wish we could get our hands on boxes of halves and Pre Loonie Dollars. SO jealous of the US roll hunters with all the Halves they have access to. :)
If there is anything I can help with...let me know.
Happy Hunting all!

When you say "low ball sets" what exactly do you mean. Like the lowest possible grade coin but was still in circulation? I haven't gone though any rolls for quite a few years, but I use to back in the 80's. I use to search dime and quarter rolls looking for any silver coins of any grade and pull them. I would get at least 1-2 pieces from each roll. I once found a 1874-25 cents in decent grade.

SPP: is there much interest in lower grade(I'm assuming you mean lower grade) sets in the US or overseas? Your topic got me thinking that it would be pretty easy to put together a set ( or at least almost a set) if quality wasn't a issue. I'm sure there are a lot of us here who would be willing to help out a fellow collector if we could.

Can't believe this day and age people are stupid enough to still be coin roll hunting. You do know that it is near impossible to find a bank that is willing to buy those rolls back don't you. Sure all of them will sell them to you but then none of them wants to buy those hundreds of rolls back.

Dogchow, some would say the same from those that get their coins from ebay, and for the same reason.

Hi spp. I myself have assembled complete sets including major and minor varieties selecting the best coins found to date. one cents 1920 to 2011 one cents 1937 to 1996 5 cents 1922 to 2011 5 cents 1937 to 1981
I am happy to have every year I am after and sets of compositions.
The banks do not give me any hassles when I go in with 50 rolls in hand to deposit. They do not act too happy if you trade one box for another of the same amount.

I do the same thing as cladhunter13. I buy boxes from a few different banks and return to others. I search both cents and nickels. I have never thought of assembling a low ball set. I recently began collecting errors and that is what I am searching the rolls for. I could easily put one together though as I thousands of both copper 1 cent and pure nickel 5 cent coins. I think I am a hoarder.

One of the problems with low ball sets is Canadian Nickel coins wear like diamond... there is no equivalent in US coinage. But yeah I'd expect low ball sets of large cents at least.

Well SPP I have been roll hunting for 6 years in pennies (just moved to dimes) I keep everything from 1959 and older regardless of grade. Also all varieties to present. Almost have a roll of 1965 Type 1's 2 rolls of 53 SF and 15 1985 Pointed 5's. I could easily make sets up.

@dogchow...must be the area you live, I have never had a problem taking my rolls back to banks. I love to roll hunt and still score some pretty decent coins so I guess I'm one of the "stupid" ones.
