This is a very interesting coin albeit in poor condition. Buttrey and Hubbard in A Guide Book of Mexican Coins state that an example of the 1867 one quarter Real struck over 1863 one centavo is known. Bailey, in State and Federal Copper says that over strikes are not as rare as thought, and all 1867 1/4Rs should be closely examined.
What's cool about this one that instead of the date it has the one centavo mint mark. I was not able to get a good photo, but the gouge on the cap and rays side goes directly into the P of SLP. In hand the SLP is easy to see without magnification. There is no trace of a date.
Also attached is a non over date 1867 SLP 1/4R for comparison. This without initials, unless the guy who cleaned the coin with an ice pick scraped off AFG. There are some cat hairs floating around in the pics.
Does anyone have a photo of an over struck coin that shows the date?
