So ... a fellow has 3 1896 Morgan dollars to choose from and all of them are pretty nice. Each is priced at 45 dollars. Two are from Philadelphia, and the third is from San Francisco. Guess which one I bought?

I believe its gradeable, and would think about an AU-55.

I had to do some tweaking to the picture to verify it, but it's definitely an S.

Numismedia has this coin in AU-55 listed at 830.00. Now, some will tell you numismedia is high, and I'm sure they're right, but I'm betting it's worth more than 45 dollars.

Hold an 1896-S to a high standard as regards strike. I won't come down firmly on grade from relatively small images, but if you're comfortable with its' originality you're looking at a bare minimum value exceeding $600 (AU50 in a slab).

You, Sir, are a winnar.

Now if the seller doesn't get confused as to which one I bought....

I may have to remind him to check for that little detail before he ships it.

Shoot, I'd be happy with AU-50. The price takes a massive jump from 40 to 50. The difference between a 53 and a 55 isn't but 30 dollars.

I did contact the seller and ask him to double check that the coin he was sending was the one imaged on the listing. He had little cards made up with each one, and mine was 5-A, so I doubt there will be any confusion, but I was wrong ... he had five 1896 Morgans listed, not three as I'd stated in the first post.

I can put a mint mark on another one by blowing it up, but I can't nail it down. It may be an "O". I got one good one ... let somebody else gamble on that one....if they're observant enough to spot it.

Well ..... I look and I look. I don't look at stuff I can't afford. Bracket your searches by price. There's no point in loading page after page of thousand dollar coins that I can't afford. Maybe you can afford them, but I can't ... and since I can't, I don't want to spend 3/4 of my time scrolling past listings that are, in effect, useless to my cause.

That's very good advice.
