I was looking at a 1864 2 Cent on ebay ([eBayItem]300626641954[/eBayItem]) and I thought it looked cleaned, so I looked at the sellers other coins. What do the experts here think of the coins this seller has? He sells lots of coins and has great feedback, but almost every coin he has is "BU Choice Unc Uncirculated" and almost all of copper coins are RED. Does this look strange to you or is it just me? Just looks like he is selling off their, or someone else's, high end LMC and IHC set. My guess is the owner busted open all the slabs and put the coins into a Dansco (yes, people do this with MS quality rare coins) or some other holder. Or perhaps someone has been picking for 60 years and is now selling their unslabbed collection?

The 2 cent piece in that auction looks dipped and cleaned if you look at the photo you can see fine parallel lines running across both the obverse and reverse surfaces. I suspect most of the IHC's he is selling are similar. Would not expect any to slab as MS RD.

He's a "Top Rated Seller", but it looks to me as if the coins are cleaned. Only one buyer has called him out for cleaning his coins. If you look at all of his coins at one time, the Red is different from coin to coin and many are red with little or no luster. I don't think I'll be buying any of his coins because of this. Even his nickel and silver coins look to me as if they may have been cleaned. He sells for a fraction of the value for the coin if it was a true BU Red. He's selling every coin that he's listing and coins that should sell for $800 to $1000 are selling for $100 to $200. I'm not sure, but things just don't look right to me, and I worry that the buyers are getting damaged coins that will be rejected by grading services and will just be passed on to the next buyer as a BU Red coin. Should ebay be made aware of the situation or would they even care with his great feedback and Top Rated Seller status?

I've been watching the listings by this seller for about three months now and most all his copper coins have been red or what I would consider red/brown. Some appear to have been dipped and others maybe not. I would find it hard to believe that only one person among many was able to determine that the coins are cleaned if true.

Excellent point, and I agree. When I started looking at his feedback, I thought I had to be wrong. Now I think it's just a matter of the buyer getting the coin they wanted at a price they could afford and it doesn't matter if it's cleaned. Cleaned coins sell all the time as long as the price isn't too high. The price history for his coins looks as if the buyers know that the coins are cleaned, so they don't leave negative feedback. I can't say for sure if any of his coins are cleaned. I think many of them are and that's why I asked CCF members to take a look and tell me what they thought. I'm in agreement that many of the coins he sells wouldn't pass a third party grader's standards as a Gem Red coin, but the price is reasonable for a coin that looks that nice. I'm not going to be buying coins from this seller because of his grading of the coins, the fact that he leaves out the ebay information stating the condition and it looks as if he wants a 10% restocking fee for returned coins. A good example of the price paid for a coin and the value for the grade he list is [ebayitem]270840712385[/ebayitem] listed as "Gem BU" sold for $510. NumisMedia Fair Market Value list the MS-65 Red (Gem BU) 1865 2 Cent Piece as $1,720. Most of his coins sell for far below the "Fair Market" value.

I bought from him a couple years ago. Coins were all cleaned in XF condition. His pics and auction description template has improved since I bought from him but I would be hesitant to buy again.
