I found this penny in a roll of dimes. It has no copper colour and it is magnetic. What happened?

Not a great picture, so I can't really diagnose it. Either it was never plated or it has been deplated by someone. I have done this for the grandkids just for a fun but it's nice and smooth if you do it in a plating solution.

Based on the pebbly surface I'm inclined to think it was deplated in acid.
