I placed a bid on this Torex beauty before any photo was listed for it. It remains my favourite, especially when someone tells me "all TPGs make mistakes, we're human"... I must have been drunk when I bought this one on ebay, because I really didn't notice the "chemical burn" blotches on this one. Apparently, neither did Brian. "What are all those spots, pa?" "Why son, that there's leprosy." I suspect another botched dipping job. ICCS says "A OK, Danlos".  |

One of the major dealers who sold me this beauty will surely recognize it. 1872 A/V ICCS VF20. Very rare. Looked shiny though. Almost mirror like in hand. Toned though. As PCGS noted, this coin was cleaned and re-toned. You can almost make out the photographer in the reflection - never a good sign.  |

This one, is for the advanced only...toning looks good. But what about the scratches on the cheek? Turns out they were all over, hiding underneath the toning. Quite apparent in hand. VERY apparent after a little MS70 was applied. Another coin that failed PCGS. Granted, it looks decent enough, but its been cleaned and retoned and the hairlines are very obvious in hand.  |

EASY. Cleaned, hairlines, chemically retoned (love the blues, greens and oranges). ICCS fail. NEXT.  |

Should I let this slide? I mean G4, who cares? Who cares about the hairlines on the reverse? Who cares about the "sanded off" entire rim on the reverse? Is there a point, where, as a grader you just say "who gives a flying..."...  |

NFLD beauty..this one's for you Fedor. One side toned, the other side is blast white with a shimmer of hairlines running across it. Problem? Apparently not.  |

Cleaned, retoned and rejected by PCGS. Sold by TCNC at the Torex July 24, 2011 auction...certified as ok by ICCS. In retrospect, the patchy toning should have been a tip off. Keep laughing boys...keep laughing... http://www.icollector.com/1872H-Inv...ty_i10612603 Edited by canadian-varieties

Rejected as "cleaned" by PCGS...in retrospect...ah... *** Edited by Staff | The bad word filter is in place for a reason.  WOW, congrats on your 500th post Danlos! Speaking of P.C.G.S, I can tell you horror stories of this TPG that I've experienced over the past 10 years of collecting Canadian decimal. They may know how to grade U.S. coinage, however, I wished they would stay away from Canadian coins. As for I.C.C.S., they are the most respected and coveted TPG authority in Canadian coinage and used by more sellers and dealers than all the other TPG's combined. E-bay, Torex , icollector.com and every major coin show in Canada has more I.C.C.S. graded coins in their venue than all other TPG's combined. As a matter of fact on E-bay alone they outweigh P.C.G.S. on a ratio of 10:1 in volume. When you have an I.C.C.S. coin for sale next to a P.C.G.S. coin, it will always sell higher. I've seen it time and time again! And as for the examples you've listed in this thread, well, I've seen P.C.G.S Canadian graded coins that make me vomit compared to the I.C.C.S. examples you've listed here! Glenn  |

It always amazes me how much people are willing to defend incompetence  No wonder Brian is still using 1980s technology, no website, no email, and laughing all the way to the bank. danlos,there is truth in what you say,the evidence is undeniable.But most don't see this as an anti ICCS rallying point,it's more the case of a new collector learning the first rule of this hobby "caveat emptor".Unfortunately for you this lesson has been quite expensive.

True...and I'm happy to share my mistakes with others...so they may avoid a similar costly education.. It also shows that anyone claiming ICCS is "THE authority in Canadian coin grading", or is a "professional opinion", is a liar at best... ...and that Canadian dealers and major auctioneers can not be trusted, as they will happily sell you damaged coins, if they can. It really is a "caveat emptor" world...its too bad that NEW COLLECTORS that enter the field, are entering a mine field designed specifically for them  Edited by canadian-varieties
