Hi, please help me with the detailed info on Mozambique coins in circulation. There is no info on the official site of the Bank of Mozambique. Maybe one knows where I can get the catalogue about the subject. In fact I in the nearest future I will need the detailed info on other African coins in circulation. Thanks a lot.

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for:

Use the "click here to view all" link to get pictures of all the coins listed.

I know that Mozambique recently reformed their money. Here is a clip from Wikipedia:

New Metical

A new Metical was introduced on July 1st 2006. 1000 old metecais = 1 new Metical. US$1 = 25 Meticals.

Both currencies will circulate until December 31, 2006. After that the old currency will not be valid but it will be redeemed by the Bank of Mozambique until the end of 2012.

Hope that helps.

Now the civil war is finally over in Mozambique, they can get back to something like a normal economy. While the war was on, and even for some time afterwards, they had very high inflation and issuing circulation coins was futile; they'd only circulate for a year until they became effectively worthless. Since July when that Wikipedia was posted, they've fallen to 27:1 to the US$ - a much slower inflation rate than they used to have.

The Wikipedia article does mention new coins released with the coinage reform, presumably for circulation. This link is cited as a reference; it's a blog showing their new coin designs.

The fact that information on their release and issue is hard to find makes me suspect that these coins are indeed intended for circulation, rather than for us coin-collecting foreigners. No point making collector coins if the collectors can't find out about them!

Well thanks for this research made That's really interesting and I really appreciate your contribution. Probably you are right the coins are not ment for collectors but that doesn't mean that the collectors will not like to have them. May be anyone knows what mint produce Mozambique coins?
