You are correct is is from Japan. I believe it is Year 36 which would make it 1903.The emperor at that time was Mutsuhito -(1867 to 1912). Is it about 38mm in diameter? On the reverse, where it says 1 Yen, it appears to have been overstruck.
On the obverse it shows the Meiji dynasty legend and to the right of that are 3 horizontal lines = 3, to the right of the three is a symbol like cross + which equals 10 and to the right of that is,I believe, a 6. 10 x 3 = 30 + 6 = 36. Year 36. Which in our calendar would make it 1903. I hope this helps.

Japan indeed, a 1 yen dated to the 36th year of the Meiji emperor - or AD 1903.

These coins are very commonly counterfeited. While I don't see any problems with the style of this piece, check the weight - it should be 26.96 grams.

The coin appears to be genuine. The chop marks are fun, they were applied by various merchants confirming that the coin was genuine. The next time the coin would be presented for a purchase at the merchants' shop he would recognize his mark and know the coin was good. The odd area, mentioned by an earlier poster, on the ONE of ONE YEN is "damage" opposite of where a chop mark was applied.
