All,

My wife is admin of a facebook page for people who lived in South West Africa which is now Namibia.

A lady down there mentioned that she has a 1967 1 Rand coin which she put aside from circulation and wanted to know its value, so I get an instant message.

So I do a quick lookup and discover that has 0.3858 silver in it, so a quick calculation says the melt value should be around 103 SA Rand or 103 Namibian dollars.

Another person asked if it was the pregnant springbok version. I never heard of this.

Pictures have been asked for, but can anyone shed any light on the different versions of this coin. I will post pictures if they become available.

For example, what would make it a pregnant one? Does the variety exist on both the English and Afrikaans legend versions of the coin?

As always, thanks for the help.

Not sure if it exists in the Afrikaans legend, but I found a few other pics of the "pregnant" one online and they were all English.

It must be a striking error making the springbok look pregnant.

@kena

I would be very carefull with the "pregnant" variant ... every second person in SA claim to have one.
I know the tagged ear (1966) does definitely exist ... as I own one.

Hi Ken,

Per the South Africa coin catalog this item only occurred on a 1966 Afrikaans legend coin, it is noted as a misstrike.

These silver one rand coins consist of 80% silver or .800

Some people here try and sell the 1967 so called version of this variety, but per the producer of the SA coin catalog this is hog wash. He states he is only aware of 2 of these error coins.
