I was just going through quarter at my Laundromat when I saw a white edged quarter. Thinking it was an old silver quarter, I pluck it out of the bottom of the bucket and noticed right away that it's a new State Quarter.

I obviously checked the mint mark, hoping for an "S", since those tend to be popped out of dad's collections, but it's a "P" mint marked quarter. So, now I'm here, trying to figure out if I have anything special.

I wish I could post pics, but no camera and no computer. Using a junky laptop to go on this forum.

Well, the details on the quarter is basicly the same as any other Mississippi State Quarter, Mint Marked "P", but there's no copper on the edges. It looks like an old silver coin, if your looking at it from the side, except the reeding is still in decent condition. It doesn't look like the edge is worn out or anything either. Still waiting to get home so I can weight it on my scale to see if there's anything noticeably different.

Well, if you got an idea/opinion, post away. :)

If the weight is normal, then you have one of the many silver/platinum-plated State Quarters floating around in circulation.

Silver/Platinum Plated? I never heard of Platinum Plated Quarters before. Well, I wonder if there's any kind of true numismatic value or is this one of those Random worthless coins? Well, I guess I have nothing to do but wait till I get home so I could weigh it. I guess I'll post what I find, so it'll help everyone else figure out what I have.

Anyways, hopefully it's a cool find, if not, I guess I'll just toss it into my random coin bucket.

The Home Shopping Network(among others) sold scads of platinum, gold, and silver-plated State Quarter sets. Over the years many of those buyers have discovered that their purchases really have no value over face so they end up running them through a CoinStar or depositing them at their bank.

The quarter weighs 5.8 grams. And now I'm understanding. I guess it is just a useless random coin. Thanks for all the input. This site always amazes me with insight that I wouldn't be able to find anywhere else. :)

They're pretty much junk. Someone gave me a couple rolls of the gold plated ones and one roll of the platinum, I just pop them in the old slot machines around town here and there for a little surprise ;)
