Let me preface this by saying I know nothing about bills. I received in change the other day a bill with a lower than normal serial# 00020286... It is a series 2003 $1. I had never noticed a bill with 3 0's at the start before. Is this something that is at all prized by bill collectors or should it be thrown back into circulation.

Probably a very stupid question, but I appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Thundercoin

I don't see it as a stupid question at all. I don't know the answer but hopefully someone who collects notes will be able to help you.

I am sure that someone will have a reply. People on this forum sure have a knack of having good answers. By stupid I just meant probably a "touch far-fetched" to think that the bill was worth anything.

Good question, Thundercoin. I collect many bills and many with lower serial numbers. Granted, a note with two or three zeros in front are generally prized more than notes will no zeroes, but a note is not really a low serial number unless it is 1000 or lower. People won't give you much for a $1 bill from 2003 with three zeroes because... well... give me an hour and a till full of money and I will find my own. They aren't as hard to find. If you have a three digit serial number, like 00000199, and from 2003, it is still only worth maybe $50. If you save it for 50 years, yeah, it will be worth much much more. But now, a not with only 3 zeroes, I would keep, but not expect much for it...

This is a note I found at work. Lots of zeroes.

Thanks for the detailed response tyk. I may be selling an old silver certificate and a couple foreign bills on the forum sometime since I am not really a bill collector. Maybe I'll throw this one into the mix if I don't decide to use it to get a mountain dew in the meantime . I will see if I can come up with any bills with even more zero's at the front. This forum has also taught me to look for star notes, and I used to see them once in a while. Now that I am looking, no luck of course!!

You should post some pictures of your notes on this thread. I would like to see them.

I will try to post pics in a few days. I think that what I have is a silver certificate $1, and a couple of bills from China.
