I've been researching these coins I bought recently and haven't been able to find much about them. Even ebay doesn't have many (or, any) in their completed auctions. 1999 Year of the Rabbit 2002 Year of the Horse Why so rare? They seem to sell for 2x spot, or more. Any basis for this? Thanks! I didn't know whether to post this in the Bullion forum, or in Oz.

These coins were from Perth Mint's first series of Chinese lunar zodiac bullion coins. They command a pretty premium because of their limited issue and relative rarity, in the hundreds of thousands I think. 2x spot's not a bad price for these actually. Some of the more popular years and animals will go for 3-4x stop easy. Nice pics by the way

Shucks. Thanks for the compliment. I was beating myself up cause there was some dust on the coins. I'm gonna put them on ebay. I can't imagine anyone local will want them. Let's see....

It's not a bad set to collect but the premium's a bit high. And, it's one of those that once you get a couple, you'd want to complete the set, which isn't easy. Besides the cost, it's not just 1/2oz, there are 1, 2 , 10oz, and kilo coins for almost all years in addition to proof, colorized, gilded, and BU finishes... over kill for me.

can't find a buy price on APMEX, which means to me that they will try first to buy back at melt. They are selling the silver 1/2oz from the first Perth Mint lunar series for $99 each though... that's close to 600% spot

I try to never buy anything under 1 oz. of silver, but if I was gonna go after half oz. rounds, it would be this exact set of 12. Put together 24 sets of these in sets of 12, and then turn them loose on ebay, and get back to me on the profits when silver gets close to fifty again in late spring, lol.... The quality an design of the Perm mint is top notch IMO.... Back in early summer, these sets of 12 sold for 1000 to 1200 or so, in the 1 oz. variety....

Good luck! I would've gambled and started them off at 0.99, gets a lot of views and watches that way. too bad the Canadian don't have a similar set... the $15 Chinese lunar series the RCM put out at about the same time as Perth Mint's first set is not pure silver. Only thing comparable is the privy marked silver maple leafs, but that was more of an afterthought. Neither the design or COAs matched. Did the Americans issue Chinese Lunar series coins? My guess is not.

Determining the starting bid on these really bugged me. - take a risk with a low starting bid? I was afraid to, particularly not knowing how much traffic the World Bullion section of ebay got. - set a higher price? Folks may never even click on it. That's the problem with these coins. They're rare. Heck, finding completed auctions on those was about impossible. Will folks bid? Dunno.

If they are selling them for so much, you would think that the buy price would be pretty decent, though. Maybe call them up and ask for a buy quote?
