I received an e-mail from APMEX on March 14th that said the 2014 5oz Silver ATB Great Smoky Mountains National Park was in stock and available for order, so I went ahead and placed on order on the 16th. I then got an e-mail confirmation that said they would process my order immediately or within 24 hours and that, upon payment approval, my order would be shipped the business day following my order date. I paid by credit cards, so I figured there would be no problem. Well, today I checked my order status and it was still listed as "Printed Waiting to Ship." What the heck? So I gave them a call and was informed that my order was actually a "pre-order" and that they just received the coins today. Now, obviously that information was listed somewhere, since I see that Bizybackson mentioned this in his last post (which, unfortunately, I didn't read before placing my order). But I'm a bit miffed that it wasn't included in the e-mail they sent me. To be honest, APMEX is not the cheapest place around, but I was willing to pay a bit more in order to get it earlier than from other places. Had I known they didn't actually have them in stock when they claimed they did, I would have just waited and bought the coin for less somewhere else. |

Not for the bullion versions. They go up and down with the price of silver. I should have mentioned I was talking about the bullion version, sorry.

Yes, but I thought that the premium was tied to spot on those and that should make the be the same price from the various dealers. I thought the premium was fixed.

Nope, it's apparently just like ASEs. They can set whatever premium they want.

oh. I just thought I had read an article that the mint set the premium amt over spot on those. I guess we just have to shop around then. I usually just get the P version from the Mint since they are for the most part gifts and they come already in a package and with the certificate.

and.... the prices will slide for the coins,, as silver will continue to fall.
I was planning on buyng silver coins such as these for my collection but I have decided to wait for much lower prices.

I had hoped to wait until the Smokey Mountains 5oz came out and order it with the baseball commemoeratives to save on shipping but given the "sold out in 1 day" hype of the baseball I had to order those last night.
Given the mints recent record of cutting sales short of the 25K limit with the Smokey Mountains being the first coin of the year will it run it's course all year until it hits 25K or will the mint cut the mintage short again or will it well out in a few weeks based on the track record of the last 3 or 4?

Jack - I think the mint might have a better perspective on these this year than they have had in the past. So it will be interesting to see what happens. Most die hard collectors of this series will be in for the subscription and the huge discount it offers - so right off the bat - the mint will see most of the sales for each coin be made right when they are released. What they do after that depends on continued interest...by new buyers. The mint could do a single run to cover the subscriptions plus say 2000-3000 and when those are gone they are gone... and move on to the next... That's how I'd do it - to save on costs - only have 1 set up and run.
