ATB Five Ounce Silver Coins

Which is the nicer version of these coins? The mint version or the ones being sold by MCM, APMEX, etc?

Speaking of ATB 5 oz coins, I am sorely tempted to buy this to store/display my coins. I've been paying around $50 each year for a wooden display box to hold that year's coins, and this would pay for itself long before the series ran out.

The only things holding me back from buying it are (a) the fact that I already have four individual year cases and (b) I bought the 2011 set directly from the mint instead of getting the bullion versions that year (and the capsules from the mint apparently won't fit).

Still, I am tempted...

I'm thinking about getting the APMEX box too. Anyone else have any other storage options?

Gentlemen, I have the 11-drawer box from APMEX. Just have to get my act together and dig out the ATB bullion coins from various safes, SDBs and hidden at home, fill the drawers (I have 2 sets of each year, except just one set for 2011), take a picture and then put them all back. The irony is the Ps are all together in OGP, and as barryg said, those Mint capsules don't fit and would need to be transferred into Z5s. Stay tuned.

Well, I broke down and ordered that 11-drawer box from APMEX after all, along with 5 Air-Tite Z5 capsules for my 2011 coins. I guess I'll just hold onto the OGP for those in case I ever need to sell them.

Now the only question is what to do with the 4 hardwood boxes I already have. I noticed that new 5-coin boxes are now selling for $70 apiece, so maybe I can sell mine on ebay or something and get my money back...

I've been looking at purchasing this as well. Can you give an opinion of the quality of the box? Not looking for "American Tourister" indestructibility, just want it to hold up with the full 280 oz of silver when full. Thanks

Outer shipping container is large, something like 24"x 18" x 16" and heavy weighing about 15 pds.

The box itself unpacked. Very similar to a four drawer box I bought to house 1oz silver rounds from Air-Tite a few years back. Not hardwood quality but as a storage container for 280 oz. of silver, it will do. Somebody with a DIY-carpentry bent probably could create a nicer box for less money and of better quality components.



With some bullion ATB. Note the top "window" is actually a piece of stiff plastic, slightly stronger than the plastic to-go boxes at take-out restaurants, but definitely not plexiglas. Probably the cheapest component of the box.

Pros: decent box for the price, what I was expecting since I had ordered a similar box before. The blind inserts that can be removed to receive coins as they are issued are a nice touch. The bottom 10th drawer has six openings to accommodate the Tuskeegee Airmen coin when it is issued in 2021 and the five coins from 2020.

Cons: sides only have divot handles, box will be heavy when full, swing out handles would've been a nice touch. Top window as mentioned can easily be damaged or scratched, some care required in protecting the plastic window. Comes with an extremely strong shellac odor, would need to be aired out for weeks before storing any silver coins (even in Air-Tites). Black velvet flocked interior is a dust magnet, will pick up all kinds of white particulate within a 50 foot radius of the box and land inside it. As mentioned in the description the box will only fit the Z5/Z10 Air-Tite capsule, and not the OGP the P-mint pucks come in. (They could easily offer alternate inserts that fit the larger holders, IMO. What a waste to have to convert to Z5s.)



It's good option for those collectors not handy with hand tools, since it's a tidy option to put a complete set of 56 bullion or vapor blasted/burnished coins in one convenient place, and can be safely kept on a low shelf for convenience.
