Just wondering how many folks purchased one of the 2011 $10 Maple Leaf Forever coins? Just recently picked one up and have to say that the coin's simple, elegant design is outstanding and very well executed by the RCM. It looks great in person -- definitely better than the images on the RCM's website! I also like the fact that it is a commemorative piece -- it marks the 175th anniversary of the first official use of the Maple Leaf to represent Canada and its culture (in 1836 by the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Montreal, Quebec). The fact that the Society promotes/supports Quebec's secession from the rest of Canada may be the reason that the RCM didn't describe the Society in its promotion of the piece or strongly promote the commemorative nature of the coin. Politics aside, the coin beautifully presents a beloved Canadian symbol. Anyone else enjoying having this piece in their collection? Collecting history one coin or medal at a time! (c) commems. a little too expensive for my taste. did not buy it also because of its finish, a brushed BU-like as opposed to proof. In my opinion it looks and feels like bullion but is priced as a commemorative.

Quote: In my opinion it looks and feels like bullion but is priced as a commemorative. Can't agree with you on this one. The RCM issued 9 coins in 2011 that had a weight of 15.87g of 0.999 fine silver. Based on the RCM selling price of each coin and the current spot price for silver, the Maple Leaf Forever coin is priced much more in line with the "bullion" vs. "commemorative" coins offered by the RCM. The premium is still much higher than the pure bullion one ounce ML, but no where near as dear as the markups on the RCM's more typical commemoratives -- only the half-ounce Year of the Dragon coin is a better "bullion" deal. Here are the details (based on silver spot of $31.80): Coin Face Value RCM Price Weight Melt $ Over Melt % Over Melt
Year of Dragon $10.00 $29.95 15.87 $16.20 $13.75 85% ML Forever $10.00 $34.95 15.87 $16.20 $18.75 116%Peregrine Falcon $10.00 $69.95 15.87 $16.20 $53.75 332% Boreal Forest $10.00 $69.95 15.87 $16.20 $53.75 332% Orca Whale $10.00 $69.95 15.87 $16.20 $53.75 332% Highway of Heroes $10.00 $69.95 15.87 $16.20 $53.75 332% Winter Town $10.00 $69.95 15.87 $16.20 $53.75 332% Little Skaters $10.00 $69.95 15.87 $16.20 $53.75 332% Welcome to the World $4.00 $59.95 15.87 $16.20 $43.75 270% I'm not saying the 2011 $10 Maple Leaf Forever coin is the best way to buy bullion (I know I didn't buy it for that purpose), but, if that's a consideration, I believe it represents a much better "deal" than the RCM's standard commemoratives. Just my perspective...

As a commemorative and for 100% over melt I expected more than the minimal reverse proof finish and the exact same design that was used on the 2010 kilo and 2001 colorized maples. Aside from the designs, the falcon, forest, whale, etc have the limited mintage to back up the higher price (not that I feel the prices are cheap). As bullion then the dragon wins out in both price, finish, and design.
But that's half the fun of collecting :) To each his/her own.

Under this logic, the Gold Dragon 1/10 ounce is one of the better Mint deals out there.

and don't forget, when you buy a commemorative coin, it, most of the time, comes with better packaging then a regular bullion coin. Those "Coin is encapsulated and presented in a maroon clamshell case lined with flock and protected by a black sleeve" aren't free after all.

Quote: Under this logic, the Gold Dragon 1/10 ounce is one of the better Mint deals out there. i agree as well, both the silver 1/2oz and the gold 1/10oz are good buys. The gold dragon especially I would expect to be very popular. It's going to trump Perth Mint's gold dragon by far. Just hope that RCM delivers a coin to match the digital renderings Quote: better packaging then a regular bullion coin very true, however boring and uniform the maroon clamshell is getting :P I'm still going to press my point though. Just don't feel the finish and design on that coin justify the price. It would've been neat if it continued a new "Maple Leaf Forever" line, but in fact it feels like the RCM got lazy and recycled the 2001 colorized maple design on its 2010 kilo maple and again on this 2011 1/2 oz. While on that topic, that's my one beef with the 2010 piedfort maple too, the recycled design already used in the 2008 20th anniversary gilded silver maple leaf. But at least the design was flipped and the reverse proof finish done really really well on the piedfort. Well executed coins like the 2010 piedfort justifies 100%+ premium over melt (by my books it would even justify the 300%+ secondary market price for it nowadays)

and I'll stress my point. I don't think that $ 35 is that much of a bank breaker but I will agree with you about the look, it could have been nicer still.

Quote::) it's a love hate thing with RCM products Yes, Unfortunately I'm starting to hate more often. The technology available to make interesting coins has skyrocketed yet we still get poorly minted products and painted on designs. On the other hand they can make those tiny little gold pieces with extreme finesse and stunning detail that just makes me GRIN. There's always this split between Granny bait and coins. Having said that, I ordered the 1/2 ounce dragon to take a closer look at it. Looks nice in the photos, kids will love them I think.

I don't order much from the mint & the Eight Coin Parks Canada Set isn't something I would brag about.

Quote: Yes, Unfortunately I'm starting to hate more often. With you 100% on that Ugly. RCM took to decreasing mintage and increase offerings over the past few years, and that's fine. I don't really mind having more variety. The drop in quality is what really hurts. Up the price if that's what it takes, just stop selling recycled designs for no meaningful reason and pay more attention to quality instead of dreaming up the next gimmick and calling it an innovation. Rant over. Still much to love though. The new $10 silver series is quite stunning I think. Just don't have the extra cash to get into it as of yet, would have to unload quite a few coins this holiday season to afford it among other things ( a plug for my overpriced ebay listings )
