Penny Help, 1983 D Clad, Silver? Not Sure

Well hello, I have a few coins I have questions about but i'll start with this one, I keep any coin that looks a little off or old, new to posting but long time follower,, this is a 1983 D penny iv had for some time, its dented in where the clad or what ever is on it, anyone have a clue what happend?

It appears to me to have suffered some type of damage during circulation, what they guys here call PMD (Post Mint Damage, I believe).
