Have to add on here and share/vent. Canadian military posted in the US and man is there ever a difference. WRT timeline, in Canada no difference if mailed in a small community in central Ontario or in Toronto. Down south, weeks of difference! We've mailed cards from our local mid sized city post office and had them arrive almost a month later in Toronto and recently mailed wedding invites from a major top ten city in the US and had them arrive all over the continent a week later. I've never lost mail north of the border and only started to experience it, thankfully on small value packages, once I was south of the border. Even service wise, Canada Post beats the USPS hands down. Suppose the only plus in the USPS column is they deliver 6 days a week as opposed to 5.

54dollarcoin: Your post was very enlightening. The post office I was supposed to pick it up at is actually a pharmacy, so I will be raising my issues with them directly, in addition to Canada Post. As for the problems with the value of the coin, I believe the customs forms were properly filled out with proper value and description included. The tracking information shows the package was waylaid at the Customs processing plant, and the delivery notice I received in the mail has a rather hefty customs fee due on my part. bobby131313: I'm not certain of the proper postal terminology, and didn't realize there was a distinction. The package was sent by USPS International Priority mail. As to the current state of the proceedings, I contacted Canada Post to investigate. Canada Post opened, and closed their investigation in only two days, and obviously were unable to locate the coin in that time. I have also contacted the seller, and he has initiated the insurance claim through the USPS. They are conducting their own investigation, and it is expected it will take a few days before they make their determination. Fortunately for me, the seller is a large ebay retailer, and has had some experience with this type of occurrence in the past. I'm hopeful they will be able to resolve this properly and get the full compensation (though I'd much prefer to have the coin in hand instead). Things are certainly very interesting, and I will update the thread as things progress.

Quote: I'm not certain of the proper postal terminology, and didn't realize there was a distinction. The package was sent by USPS International Priority mail. Huge difference. Registered mail is the most secure US mail there is. Stays in locked cages and signed for every time it changes hands. Priority is no more secure than anything else except for the time they are on FedEx vehicles, they're likely a little more secure there than with the USPS.

Looks like someone at USPS had a little more influence than I did with Canada post, and they have located misplaced the coin. I'm not happy with Canada Post's handling of the issue, but I've got the coin in hand, so it could have certainly been much worse.

Don't say I told you................... but I told you it would show up. This kind of stuff just DOES not happen at Canada Post. Security and procedures are very very good, and mail theft is incredibly low at the Corporation. As I said earlier in 20 years of handling Registered and Prioity never lost a one!

Pays dividends to know your local postal worker and post office and be on good terms with them...
Unfortunately it's up to the seller to claim the insurance and refund you. I don't know USPS's standards, but it'll be really, REALLY slow if it's by Canada Post standards. The seller would have to start a trace on the order, which could take up to 30 days across borders, after which a claim can then be filed via mail (no electronic system for handling claims), which will take another 2 weeks to get approved before a check is sent, again by snail mail, to the seller.
I've had to claim a lost parcel to the states. It's close to 60days in, still no check.
Good luck, but press on!

Quote: Don't say I told you................... but I told you it would show up. This kind of stuff just DOES not happen at Canada Post. This stuff always happens at Canada Post. Just had 2 letters with small objects (single coin) not make it to Canada, in last 2 months. Both envelopes ripped open and placed in Canada Post body bag, of course with objects missing. Thousands of same objects all mailed in US made it. Lived in both countries. USPS isn't wonderful, but Canada Post is a joke. Don't listen to the biased employee. To the very young guy in the service, as you get older and mail more stuff you will see.

@neil get a grip you rip Canada post and you have no idea what you are talking about. As far as me being biased..I have sold more coins than you have ever seen over the last 40 years ( owned a coin shop for 13 plus). I am proud to work for Canada Post and no you are dead wrong this stuff hardly ever happens at Canada Post. BTW quit putting coins in cheap envelopes that end up going through first USPS sorting machines and then Canada Post machines at the other end. Use a bubble pack!

@54dollarcoin Want to deliver my packages then ? In the last 6 months I have been left 7 notices to pick up at the local outlet, so far I have received 3 pieces of mail. I still have 4 notices for packages they cant find dating back to june ....
They dont knock on the door or ring the bell if there is a package they leave a notice and take your package home. Dont tell me it doesn't happen because no one believes that for a minute. After 6 months of calling and complaining they still have no idea where my missing deliveries are. And after 6 months I find it unlikely I wiull ever see them.
So someone got some nice birthday/anniversary/christmas gifts.
