The state of Ohio invested in rare coins and the man responsible for overseeeing the account is in a heap of trouble.

It will be interesting to see how much the coins bring when sold. Interesting as well that at least 1% of the value of the fund ws lost in reported theft- not counting possible bad loans, etc.

It's not as if selling off $50M in coins will flood the market, even if sold at once-unless holdings aren't diversified. Its also interesting that defenders of Noe have noted that he has made money for the state- as ND stated, it is easy to show paper profits without making any money (Enron was showing wonderful profits right up until the bitter end...)
In this coin market, he'd have to be grossly incompetent or a crook to have lost money over the past 5 years- and I doubt he's incompetent I hope we'll soon see whether or not he's a crook.

It won't be the first time that prices were inflated when used as investments. Coins pose an interesting place in investments. There are many price guides that can be used. As we all know the "leading numismatic catalog" has prices only for TV. It is easy for dealers to also inflate prices on coins that are not frequently traded.
Selling these coins in the open market may not bring the returns needed. However, for investors they can write off the loss, and still make money.
