I've always fancied one of these and after looking for a long time to buy one, I've decided to go another route- to manufacture one. I found a fab shop that is able to do so, but was wondering if anyone have any suggestions.

As Trade dollars are prohibitively expensive, I'm looking to do this with Morgans or Peace dollars. Anyone have any comments on which will wear better in the long run as a pocket piece?

As it will take 3 coins to do this properly, I want to make sure I can enjoy it, but not be burdened with a "cull" looking coin after a few years of pocket time.

Also, if anyone have an opium coin/locket and would like to explore selling, that will save me a lot of time in waiting. =)
Rest in Peace

"Opium coin/locket" is just a name of that object, you don't have to use it for opium.
Maybe he want it for Viagra?
Rest in Peace

The other name I have seen for this is a box dollar. If I were going to fab one I would use Eisenhower dollars. That way you are not making a reproduction that could get confused as the real thing (or even get accused of trying to reproduce it as the real thing). I would think an Eisenhower modern reproduction of a box dollar would be more unique and have more interest to coin collectors than a modern reproduction of a trade box dollar. Not to mention the coins would be cheaper. It sounds like it would make a great pocket piece.

I know of one place that makes them, though I have never done any business with them nor do I know of anyone who has so I cannot personally vouch for them.

Looks like $120 for a Peace dollar, and $40 for an ike.

If you do have a modern one made (through them or anyone else) let me know how it goes, I have been fancying the same thing for a while and just never did it yet.

How about making one from a Silver Eagle? It would never be confused for an old one and would be Beautiful.
I agree with others who dispute the Opium aspect (how much Opium would fit in that small space!)and would bet there were originally used for Photographs or lockets of Hair.
