I won another surprise coin on ebay for very little money.

This double struck / broad struck dime has both strikes centered and a section of reeding has broken loose on the reverse.

I did a last second bid and WON! I've been getting some really cool coins the last few weeks!

Very Cool! I see more error coins in ANACS slabs than anything else. I just bought a 1985P Washington quarter with partial brockage and partial collar for $40. I was happy with it, and it's already graded MS60, I thought it was a good buy, if you don't mind me asking, how much did you have to pay?

I see no solid evidence of a second strike. Many such coins are "forced broadstrikes". The "rim" on the reverse face and a beveled edge with smeared reading are caused by transient contact with a stiff, but still collapsing collar. You see the same effect on ordinary partial brockages and indents in the area across from the indentation on the opposing face.

All of the grading services make the same mistake. When purchasing a double strike, make sure you have incontrovertible evidence of a second strike.

ARGH! At first I was like , then I was like and now I'm like .

I looked at the coin and I can see where the second strike caused the original strike to flatten out across the coin, not just doubled letters at the rim area of the broad-strike.

I was worried at first, but I'm sure now that they got it right. It's a double strike AND a broadstrike, but thanks for causing me to have my first acute myocardial infarction and thanks. as always for teaching me something new about errors. I'll be looking much closer from now on and NOT just trusting the TPG's opinion of the coin. I can see how they could get it wrong!

I'll try to get some better pictures and post them this week. These are just the sellers photos from ebay.

What you need to look for in a bona fide double strike is, on the reverse face, a fully-formed set of letters and, outside it, partial lettering. All I see on your coin is smeared lettering, which can be attributed to metal flow during a single strike. However, better photos might show that my impression is wrong.
