Hi. I'm sure I've bought more than one or two fake notes in my time. Are there any key ways of knowing that I'm looking at a fake Colonial or Confederate note? What should I be looking for?
The easiest clue is the serial number - most fake notes are copies of just one or two genuine notes. There are several websites that list "known fake note serial numbers"; the one I always use is CrutchWilliams.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
When it comes to colonial or confederate I personally wouldn't buy a note that isn't in a PCGS or PMG holder. It's worth the extra bucks to know you have a piece of history rather than a piece of... you know.
I'd suggest that you attend a few coin shows, talk with knowledgeable dealers and study their wares. See if the local library has any books available. Check your area for coin clubs in order to network with local collectors. Just a few, humble suggestions. Happy hunting!
