My grandfather gave this coin/medal to me to see if I could identify it. I'm hoping someone here can help.

The inscription and the design suggest Thurii, a Greek city in what today is Calabria, Southern Italy. This map shows the location* of the place: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corigliano_Calabro

Your piece will probably (I am not an expert) be a modern copy, or a medal based on ancient designs. More about the coins from Thurii is here: http://www.willamette.edu/cla/class...nfo/028.html

That article also explains what is depicted on your piece. More images of similar coins:

(* The precise location of Thurii is apparently not known. Here is a Wikipedia text about the place: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thurii )
