This came up on my ebay e-mail alerts. Is this legal to sell.... a 1933 Buffalo nickel? The guy explains how he did it - over strikes of genuine Buffalo nickels and he calls them Hobo Nickels. Limited to 38 pieces.

To quote "They have the correct metallic content (no heating or melting is performed), and correct diameter. All the over-strikes are privately and painstakingly performed using a surplus Denver Mint coin press !"

He makes several different fantasy dates. They have been discussed several times. Basically he consideres them to be legal because he overstrikes real coins and because they haven't stepped in to stop him. My personal opinion is that they are not legal.

It's an altered coin and if sold should be labeled as a coin/date altered coin. Not as a 1933.

That ebay seller is not the creator of this fantasy Buffalo, it was minted by NY and RI State Quarter designer Daniel Carr who operates the Moonlight Mint.

I agree with satxwd, this coin should be labeled as an altered coin, not a 1933, as that can be quite misleading. I don't believe they are considered illegal though.

Here is a previous discussion regarding DC's 1964 Peace dollar. I think many of the same arguments apply to this 1933 Buffalo nickel.

OK, I'm familiar with Daniel Carr and the Moonlight Mint. In my opion these 1933 Buffalo nickel fantasy pieces with an identifiable die crack on the reverse and limited strikes (1-38) could become valuable in the future.
