Ive never gone detecting but I've often question how people go about getting permission to detect on public and private land. Do you have to agree to share a cut of what you find? Just curious.

I don't ask permission for city parks here. Just gives someone a reason to say "no".
Have never had a problem in 3 years.
I've hunted many private properties, which of course I obtain permission first! I get a yes probably 7 times out of 10, or better. I don't split finds unless asked, although many times I will show finds, and give up an IH or merc. Some property owners just don't care about the finds.

As I drive back and forth from "A" to "B" on selected weekends I am constantly fighting the urge to pull over and search some of the dilapidated houses that are dotted along the state highway.

Oih82W8 that is exactly why I'm looking to get me a detector. The land I hunt has one homestead that you can't hardly walk through anymore, wood floor is rotted, wholes in ceiling where it is coming down, etc. Another homestead on this place there is nothing left but the cement steps and plumbing. Then a couple more even less than that but there used to be structures there. I'm dying to get a detector and do some digging. Earl

Those would be great places to search, especially finding places built in the early 60s or earlier, when silver coinage was used.
