Thats the mint mark I have on my Aurelian but its really worn and you can only see it from the side. You have a good bunch of coins here.

I really like the Maximinus II quarter follis Mainly because I'm collecting GENIO coins at the minute, these QF coins can be quite expensive and add to that the fact that its Maximinus II and you've made me very jealous  Some of these QF coins were in the past extremely rare until a few large Balkan hoards were found. |

I think the Aurelian is mis-attributed. The "star P" makes it RIC 225. I'll take the hit for that. Sorry

JW has been a big help to me as well Gil-galad, as all on this forum. I do appreciate the time it takes to attribute a coin and the history behind them. I tried to purchase a batch of uncleans a couple of days ago and had JW look at them. He thought he saw something in the center coin and sure enough I got blown out of the water with my bid. Did pickup another batch, but I have feeling they are going to be kinda what I've been told before....slugs! Hope not though. I still need an avatar!

Well, I've been trying to avoid those lots because I've already had bad results from cleaning coins that were only partially cleaned. A Valens coin, blew the patina right off, left some patches on the coin that I couldn't remove. Where the patina was blown off, the surface of the metal looks bleached and very ugly.
Another coin, a lot of stuff was removed but was left turned black and won't come off. Where the stuff has been removed has bare metal that looks shiny. But it doesn't look good. It's a Constans coin.
A Julian II coin I placed in distilled water and it turned green on me. I then placed it in a small cup of olive oil. That solved the problem but also turned the coin a little darker.
Only two coins turned out good. I ran some hot water on them and cleaned with dish soap and a very light scrub with a soft toothbrush. Then quickly drying them.
Even those problems if you don't run into slugs. I just pick and choose coins based on what I want and I do find decent and low grade coins for a decent price. I really don't want to clean any coins unless I have to, honestly. lol
I got blown out of the water as well on one bid and a couple others. But I don't mind, there are so many coins out there to collect, it's almost beyond imagination.

Sometimes it's best not to heavily clean some coins because the dirt actually highlights some of the legends and devices. Also, sometimes the dirt looks good on a ancient coin.
I certainly won't clean a coin with a nice sand patina.

These are not totally crusted over. Well, that's not completely true. A FEW of them are not totally crusted over, where you can actually see some detail. I only spent about 16 bucks, including shipping for 10 coins. If two or more come out looking good, I think I'll be happy. Most of all though, it is my first purchase of ancients and just handling them will make it worth the few bucks I spent on them. Thanks for the advice.

Gil-galad, was it you that was experiementing with hydrogen peroxide? I seem to remember reading a thread on this forum that had quite a few members trying out the 3% solution on uncleans and seemed to work with some success on some coins, but not on others. I'd have to go back and look for that thread.

I have been looking at different references books to purchase and of course online reference material as well. I think you said at this point you don't own any physical books on ancients? You might have noticed I'm trying to get my post count up as well. :) Thanks

Yes, I used 3% hydrogen peroxide to clean some coins. The results wasn't always good. I used HP on a Valens and Constans coin. That's the results I told you about.
As far as books are concerned. I have a few PDF books that I downloaded and I was given some as well. I've been exploring my options for a hard copy. Since they are very expensive, I'm not sure I'll get one for awhile.
As long as you are happy with the coins, that's what counts. If those uncleaned coins are good enough to attribute after cleaning, that's an additional plus. Eventually you may wish to get some higher quality coins.
