My two son's being the smart kids they are, couldn't decide on anything to get me for Christmas, so they offered to pay for the next $200 worth of coins I buy. Well, that was all I needed to hear, so I went shopping the last couple of days and purchased some very nice coins and I've only spent half so far. I have them all attributed, so if anyone wishes to try their skills at attributing, have at it.

The first coin is a Denarius of Domitian struck under Vespasian:

The second is a Denarius of Julia Domna:

New-Coins-For-Christmas

New-Coins-For-Christmas

Next is a Constantine II AE3 Follis Campgate:

New-Coins-For-Christmas

New-Coins-For-Christmas

Fourth is a Constantius II AE3 Campgate:

New-Coins-For-Christmas

New-Coins-For-Christmas

Fifth is a Constans AE2 FEL TEMP REPARATIO:

New-Coins-For-Christmas

New-Coins-For-Christmas

The sixth coin is a Gratian AE 3 GLORIA ROMANORVM:

New-Coins-For-Christmas

New-Coins-For-Christmas

Seventh, we have a Gallienus Antoninianus Sol:

New-Coins-For-Christmas

New-Coins-For-Christmas

And the last coin I bought blind. It was advertised as "a coin recovered from the Mediterranean sea from an ancient shipwreck site. It is a bronze coin with the portrait on the front and on the back of the coin is what looks like a cresent moon with a circle in the middle, or what else might look like the ancient symbol for the "Eye"." This one I am very curious to see.

Not bad. Eight coins averaging $12.50 each including shipping. And I still have half my Christmas present to spend yet.

Very cool! Those sure are nice pickups. Love that Pegasus (right?) on the Domitian and that patina on the Constantine II campgate. I'm also getting some Roman coins for Christmas, 5 actually (including the Hadrian posted earlier). I'll reveal the 4 others to you guys after I unwrap them. Again, very nice coins!

Congratulations on reaching that point in life where you are impossible to buy for. Double congratulations for having sons who realize that fact and can deal with it. I would consider it a gift if I even knew anyone who might understand what I want for Christmas, let alone fund it.

I like the Gratian but I put more importance on surfaces than most.

Thank you all for your comments. Actually, I have two great sons, who, like Doug says, understand me pretty darn good. My oldest son understands me way too well. We're two peas hulled from the same pod. We usually butt heads because of it. My youngest is totally like his Mom in personality. Great kids, both of 'em.

I have a question for the group. The Domitian Pegasus Denarius has me a little puzzled. I think I have it attributed correctly, but there are several Pagasus coins struck under Vespasian that, to me, I can see no differences. Don't just look at Wildwinds, as there are only the two listed. There is at least two others. Can anyone tell me not only what the attribution is, but why?

I think the first Constantine II Campgate is;

Cyzicus

RIC VII 52

Constantine II AE3. CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C, laureate (resembles pearl diadem), draped, cuirassed bust left / PROVIDEN-TIAE CAESS, campgate, 2 turrets, 8 layers, star above, no door. Mintmark: SMKŠ„.

Even though the mintmark is SMK epsilon, after looking at images and using Helvetica's Excel charts, this is the ID I come up with. Based on number of layers on reverse, dot on left, no door, 2 turrets. ETC.

Unless this ID allows for different workshops in exergue.

For the Constantius II campgate, I used the Excel chart again.

Cyzicus

RIC VII 38

FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C

Looks like a pearl Diademed to me. Even though the ID says laureate. Perhaps it's like the previous Constantine II campgate.

6-7 seven layers seen on tower.

SMKB dot in exergue.

For the fifth coin, I'll try it again with the Excel sheets.

Constans

Antioch

RIC VII 126

That's assuming that the coin is from Antioch.

The only number I was able to come up with for the Domitian is RIC II 238.

There are six coins here on vcoins.http://search2.vcoins.com/results.a...f7c4bdb48799 One looks like yours and is RIC 238. The others seem to all look a little different from each other.

Why I can't say.. not all have the RIC number mentioned or mint. Two say Rome mint about 76 AD.

The portraits all seem to be a little different.

I'm with echizento for the Domitian. I checked with 2 different sources and they both have it as RIC 238.

I'm not arguing. You all may be right. But I attributed it as RIC 921 because of the portrait style. You see what I mean? It's not as cut and dry as it first seems.

For the Gratian, if that first letter in exergue is a Delta and the last letter is an E, I'd say it's RIC 14c Siscia. MM: Delta SISE
