This my first ancient. My father bought it for me during a business trip to Chicago in the early '70's for $39.

Recentlly I saw its twin on ebay. They were asking $800. It's not worth that much is it?
The ad list it as:

Iberian Tribe of Osca (the Celsitani) in Spain
Silver Drachm 18mm (3.87 grams) Struck circa 204-154 B.C.
Reference: Sear 28; Heiss 1-2
Head right with short beard, Iberian letters behind.
Horseman galloping right, holding spear couched; beneath, Iberian legend.

I think the attribution correct.

There are a few like it here for about 150-200 here.http://search2.vcoins.com/results.a...2ae1aecb84e5
Some dealers on ebay will ask an outrageous amount for a coin just to see if they will get it I guess, but will take a much lesser amount if offered.

I like the nice even wear on your coin, it went through many hands.

Yours is pretty worn but still attractive. If it sold fairly for $39 in the 70's, you might justify a bit under $100 today which is not far from the links on VCoins which are less worn.

Collectors new to ancients but experienced in US or other modern coins often have trouble understanding the market and price structure. Many 'dealers' price coins way above any reasonable expectation and make their profit when someone buys a coin. Others mark up less and sell more coins to make the same profit. At the current rate of appreciation, this coin will be worth $800 in a couple centuries....maybe. Perhaps the one you saw on ebay was much, much nicer in which case you might justify $300 if you are a full service, respected dealer like this one:

The same coin on ebay might bring half that.

Nice coin, rare, and historically important.

You don't see many Spanish coins of this era, and a desirable piece to have in any ancient collection.

I have been interested in ancients for over 40 years, and I have never even had the opportunity to consider a coin such as this, due to unavailability.

My first ancient was a denarius of Antoninus Pius in nice VF, with the modius and corn ears reverse, purchased in 1968, for $4.50.
