Hey all, I am new to ancient coins, but I believe that this is a Campgate. I know there are many varieties out there and it would probably take me a long time to figure out which variety this is. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

It's a Constantine I, but I am having trouble reading the mintmark in exergue on the reverse. Can you make out the letters. It looks like it may be SMK Gamma with a dot in the left field. Anything you can read in hand will be helpful.

If I am correct, it would most likely be a Cyzicus RIC VII 51 AE3. 327-328 AD. CONSTANTINVS AVG, laureate head right / PROVIDENTIAE AVGG, campgate with two turrets & one star above, dot left, SMK Gamma (I think). This coin is rated as R1, meaning slightly rare. Since you are new, I will presume to tell you the ratings go from C for common and R1-5 with R5 being the rarest. We've had this discussion before on this board about these ratings and how little they mean since thousands upon thousands of coins have been discovered since they were rated. But it is handy as a discriminator for cataloging purposes. BTW welcome to the world of Ancients.

Regards,

JW

I don't think it is SMV. The possibilities would be SMK, SMN, SMH, SMA, or SMT. I think I covered all the possibilities. To me it looks like SMK or N then a workshop letter (I think I see a greek gamma, but I certainly could be wrong). The real tell is the dot in the left field. Not common, so that is what I've been looking for.

Welcome to ancient coin collecting. I agree with JW about the MM and ID. It's a nice coin. That light green materialaround the edges looks like the start of bronze desease and has to be removed before it starts to destroy the coin. There are several sites on the web that explains how to do that.

Thanks for the info jwharper and echizento. I picked this one up with some world coins when Vermontensium (Dave) and I went to a local coin shop after a day of metal detecting. Will look up on how to get rid of the bronze disease.
