With the recent posting of several Jefferson nickel "Black Beauty" Topics, I thought it would be fun and educational to have something akin to a "Black Beauty or not" Thread. Dirty nickels abound and I think it would be beneficial to have a discussion thread dedicated to this subject where people could post their finds and have members state their opinions on whether the posted nickel was a "black beauty" or not. I have a few I am going to start with and post my opinion. The trick here is to prevent endless quoting and re-posting of pics so... Post your pic and give it a relatively unique ID. The ID should be short. Replies would be <ID> "BB" or "Not" with some qualifying comment if needed/desired. I will post one for an example shortly and also provide a reply

I admit to being confused about what you are asking here? It should be obvious to all the true Black Beauty Jefferson are know from 1958 and 1959 ... so what is the intent of this thread? Please clarify. David

I did a quick search the term "Black Beauty" across the forum categories and found that it was, apparently, not obvious to all - or at least an arguable point. So the intent is to clarify the issue and to give a place for people to post their finds for comment and review. If you feel that this is an unnecessarily redundant thread on the subject, please let me know and I'll have it deleted. I appreciate your input because, quite frankly, I do not recall ever having heard the term applied to nickels until a few weeks ago and really don't know much about them (including the years of occurrence until your post here.)

Your 59 appears to be one. Check the edge also. The color is very distinct. Not really black but a dark gun metal color. Like deep bluing. The planchets were improperly annealed (heated/cooled etc.) The color runs through the planchet not just on the surface. Here are some scans and one edge pic. of mine. Since these scans were taken the coin was accidently scratched on the reverse. Not real bad but deep enough to see that the color ran deeper. After looking at a few you can tell if they are the beauty type planchet.

Thanks Indian1 So, then, it seems obvious that this one is not a BB because you can see the gunmetal coloring does not go through? (Notice the nicks, lower left): PC NonBB 1

I did sort of bait an answer on that last post. Here is the same coin in different lighting: PC NonBB 1 (A warning to beware of photo lighting if buying via internet.) This coin is actually a 1985 P
