What do you all think of this coin? There are other things going on in the denticles that did not pick up in the photo, on the western edge.

I should note that the denticle photo was taken with a different lighting angle.

Thanks!

There is no such variety listed in Rick Snow's Indian cent attribution guide. I'd send him the photos you posted here and ask if he is interested in seeing it.

That's interesting! It looks like raised metal crossing the denticles. Usually, this is caused by an MPD (misplaced digit). Rick Snow would be a good one to ask.

Look more like a die crack to me.

It appears very thread like and is too perfectly shaped to be a crack in my opinion. There is also a very large die gouge crossing several denticles, I think about the T in UNITED. I'll pass on the info I get.

I just noticed that the raised metal is connected to the denticle directly under the 1, and that denticle is shorter than the others... as if the top was peeled off. It is more obvious looking at the entire coin.

Rick was kind enough to spend some time with me on the phone regarding 10 IHCs I sent him. None were new varieties, but the 1904 I sent was indeed the unphotographed S-5. So, my IHC is the file photo for the 1904 S-5! Not a bad coin at MS63 BN! Sounds like I have some MS64s coming back, too.

Rick felt the 1897 IHC above was not good enough to warrant a new attribution.

Congrats on the 1904! So he felt the 1897 was a (minor) MPD?

No, it isn't a MPD. He mentioned a scratch, but I've never seen a scratch so perfectly and fluidly shaped. Looks like a thread to me.
