Have you guys noticed an increase in demand for coins over the last year compared with previous years? I've kept an eye on ebay prices over the last year and I have found people and willing to pay more for the same coin in 2011 than they did in 2009 + 2010. I'm not talking about silver coins only as this can be explained by the increase in silver price. What do you think?

Perhaps the market has a bit more money to spend. ?Maybe the economy is showing some signs of picking up?. If that is the case, it will be a slow faltering process.

The silver price has dumped over the last couple of months but the coin prices have not. I think more poeple are starting to collect coins , Either as a hobby or as an investment. That would explain why the auctions are getting better prices as there are more people bidding to get what they want.

Are you talking about oz coins, or coins in general?

I mainly collect Aus coins and have just started to get a US collection together. I have noticed more intrest in the Aus coins lately.

I might agree, but only a little bit. The silver coins without high numismatic value just follow the spot price. Most of the rest may have seen slight increases, but nothing noteworthy. It might just be the particular series(s) you've been looking at. SLQs have skyrocketed IMO. Buffalos have gone down. Lincolns and BU Jeffs have seen a slow and steady climb. IDK, I don't think there is been a huge increase across the board especially since silver spot is back down so Roosies, Washingtons, Franklins, etc have gone down
edit...to say, oh and I forgot to mention that proof sets seem to be losing value every single year. I don't really get that, I personally really like in tact proof sets, but most of them aren't even worth their issue price and the ones from the 80's in particular are treated as complete junk. hmmm.

there seems to be a large following for austrailian lunar coins on ebay because there is always a lot of bids when they come up for sale and the prices are usually high.

oh, oooops, Your post as well as your avatar don't say anything about Australian. I see now this is in the Australian forum, but I just found my way here through the "top 100" section. I've made that mistake before too. I've always thought this site should completely separate Australian, Canadian, and US posting...with possibly one combined forum section for those topics. I never liked the combined "top 100". I've clicked on several thread titles that sounded interesting only to discover I had nothing to say because it was all Australian or Canadian discussion. The same presumably happens to foreign posters with US threads.

Yes, I have noticed an uplift in prices in Australian coins, not sure about the root cause yet.

Don't be shy Hesgut, I always look at the top 100. Wherever the topic is posted from is irrelivant as long as it concerns coins it is normaly of intrest to me

It's funny you say that because many coins are going up (outisde of gold/silver) but also many coins are going down (1925 pennies for one come to mind). I think whatever it is causing it it's a good thing to have the extra interest (maybe more people have more stable jobs and cash flow than a couple of years ago). I know rare coin prices are all over the place but that's more to do with investors who don't even know what they are buying so it's hard to draw a line through that market.

I guess demand on coins will never decrease as population always increases.

I'd say even with pre-decimal australian coins I have noticed and increase demand overall and particularly for sets. haven't kept an eye on the 1925 penny itself thus cannot comment.
