Hey,
I'm working on my coin collection and trying to make it bigger and work on my penny set. My questions is should I be buying single coins or BU rolls. I have already decided not to purchase Cert. coin just yet and a uncert 2009 penny is 0.35 at MS63 and 1.50 at MS65 (J&M)... now I can get a BU Roll of the same date for 2.50. Would you just buy the single for the set or buy a roll so that you have extras and get more for your money.

Thanks,

James

If shipping is not an issue I would buy the roll.....I enjoy going through rolls...in most mint rolls you can pretty much be sure of getting at least 3 or 4 MS65's, a half dosen 64's and a bunch of 63's.

take the best you can find for your colection and the rest you can use as gifts to other collectors or things like that.

It's not all that common to just pull an MS65 out of a single roll from the 60's either, If you are honest about carbon spots and bag strikes, that's a hard grade to hit. It's also where ICCS graded falls down sometimes (meaning carbon spots), I've got a few of their cents in MS 65 I got from other collections and I keep thinking "I would have rolled that back up".

This is exactly the type of coin your local dealer will generally have on hand as well, you can look and decide for yourself in person, ignore the grade on the card and decide if it looks like one you want.

BUT ---- Roll searching can be very much more rewarding and satisfying "yeah this was the best one out of a roll and I really like it" can mean a lot more than a pro grade. So it depends what kind of satisfaction you want to get out of your collection. I prefer that "hand picked" feeling actually.

Hey, Thanks for the responses, I think I agree with both of you. The thing with internet buying vs coin shows/local dealer (which I lack in North Bay) is you dont have the coin in hand. With the rolls you never know what you are going to get so as long as its a BU roll you dont really need to see it in hand. Well I think my mind is made up rolls all the way (at least the cheaper ones :) ).
