pattiewhack sparked an instrest:
just a little info. when the "V" nickel came out in 1883 the word cents was not on the coin. this small oversight sparked the dishonest to gold plate thm, cut reeds by hand(allot of work for 4.95) and pass them off as $5.00 gold coins.
This part we all know. but a famous case came about due to this. a deaf mute named Josh Tatum would stop each day to buy his 5 cent cigar and pay for it with a plated $5.00 gold piece and get 4.95 in change. Josh was acquitted in trial and the mint had learned its lesson and added the word "CENTS" to the coin the following year.
just a little fyi

I might add that the word "joshing" traces back to Josh Tatum. Josh was also very clever to purchase something for exactly 5-cents, thereby representing the coin as a nickel. Had he represented the coin in any way to be a $5 gold piece, he would have been convicted.

Cool story busthalf, never heard it until now.

I have an interesting gold plated V nickel from 1907... which doesn't really make any sense because 'CENTS' were added back in 1883.
