Well, I did it. I went and jumped in both feet forward and purchased a Caligula Denarius. It wasn't cheap, but I got a good deal on it. Its slightly porous, but the detail seems pretty good. It is a RIC I 10 struck 37-38 at Lugdunum: OBV: C CAESAR AVG GERM P M TR POT, bare head right REV: DIVVS AVG PATER PATRIAE, radiate head of Divus Augustus right This coin completes my set of Denarii of the first 12 Caesars. I will post another thread once I have this coin in hand. The dealer also threw in a Titus Denarius that looks pretty darn good as well. It is a RIC 115 struck at Rome in 80 AD: OBV: IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M, laureate head right REV: TRP IX IMP XV COS VIII PP, elephant walking left

Congrats on completing the 12 Caesars, that is some accomplishment. I have a long way to go before I can complete my set. That's a nice looking coin, I bet it was very expensive.

Quote: I bet it was very expensive. I guess that's relative. To me it was a fortune, but a fortune I was willing to spend. I was able to get the dealer to sweeten the deal with the Titus coin plus he came off his price by 20% and included the shipping. All in all, I am pleased. It's just my wallet that's much thinner tonight.

I would have to save up for a while before I could spring for one. Love the Elephant reverse on the Titus.

Not only Caligula but the rare version with legend on the Augustus side. Triton XII had nice one that barely failed to make their estimate of $10k. I don't know enough about coins in this ballpark to feel comfortable buying one. I hope the source was beyond possibility of question?

Quote: I hope the source was beyond possibility of question? The dealer is well known in Europe and a member of FENAP-European Federation of Professional Numismatists. He has a lifetime guarantee of authenticity. I'm not sure what more I can ask. I'm really pleased with this purchase despite the cost. I can hardly contain myself. I wish I could show this off to someone in person who might care, but the people on this forum are the only ones I know who can see the value of these gems. I truly appreciate everyone here and the comments and commentary we have on a daily basis. Regards

Wow...just by reading the title, I wondered if that meant you got your Caligula denarius. And I see you got a very nice example too--congrats!

Hi jw,first of all my compliments in my usually bad english....then I'll say that the style of the caligula is right for me,even if I can't explain the porosity, however I've read the seller is a valuable man so no problem. I've seen around and after all I think that a similar denarius can't be bought for less than 1000$ ....I've seen you usually buy nice coins for very cheap prices....so I'm sure you'll have obtained a very cheap price even this time...maybe with the titus one less 20%....700-800$....

Perhaps we should have a pool: "Just how cheaply did JW get that Caligula Denarius?" I don't expect him to divulge the price, but if I were to bet, I'd say he got it for around $500.

No, don't bet on this one. You'll lose for sure. Giano is right. If you look around at Caligula Denarii, they are not cheap. So cheap then becomes relative to what the market is demanding. In that case I got it cheap. But, for me, this coin is the very most expensive coin I have purchased. My next highest cost coin was $800 and, I embarrassed to say, this one far exceeds that. Again, it is a very good price for this Caesar's coin and I would hazard a guess that you would be hard pressed to find another like it at a lower cost. Especially when you factor in the Titus Denarius and the included express mailing service.
Thanks for all the compliments. Once I have it in hand, I plan to take a picture of all 12 together and post it here.
Regards,
