Is this a 1961-D/D? If so, why is there no mention of it in the variety sections at NGC / PCGS. Does it carry any kind of premium?

Hi,

It is hard to tell from that picture, but it looks more like a die chip than an RPM, because I don't see the rest of the D going through the mintmark center.

Do you have a close up of the mintmark at a few different angles?

I doubt NGC and PCGS are able to post all RPMs on their site, since there are hundreds of them over the various denominations. Most likely they just recognize the most popular ones.

Yes, it says there are at least 2:

For some reason, they just list # 2 and not # 1.

And Dr. Wiles on varietyvista.com doesn't list any.

I wish they would be consistent and list what has been reported.

One of the problems with varieties. No one wants to list them completely. And trying to get photos of some are impossible.

I was finally able to upload a couple more pictures that show a little more detail. I hope these new pictures will help.

The coin is BU, but probably not a very high grade. Does anyone think this coin should carry any amount of premium to the RPM? Should I send it in for grading? Thanks!

You could email Dr. Wiles from Variety Vista and see what he thinks. He is an expert on the subject.

And most RPMs of this kind don't increase the price of the coin by much. It might be worth around $4-5 at the most.

Going to a third party grader (like ANACS) would be pretty expensive, since the cost of the grading would exceed the value of the coin.

Thank you for the tip and your thoughts on this coin. I agree, if there is no premium involved, it is certainly not cost effective to submit the coin for grading.
