The obverse of this particular coin is very similar to the Gallienus 'Gryphon' coin that I posted yesterday that I thought it was probably the same guy. However, the reverse is in such bad shape that I couldn't make out what the image was. The coin weighs almost twice as much as the first at 2.63 grams, but is only 15.5mm. My macro camera records every pore on the coin, but in hand it looks much better than what it appears in the images. What do you think? Another zoo animal? Or something completely different As always, thanks and regards.

Looks like a Claudius Gothicus to me, but I could be wrong. As to the reverse, I have no clue.

Actually, now that I took a better look at the reverse, it looks like it's an eagle, the style reminding me of the eagles on some tetradrachms.

That would fall into the era of the crusties I found this in. Earliest yet the Gallienus (253-268), so Claudius II (268-270) would fit nicely. I'll be doing some research on this fellow. Thanks Jango-Fett. But doing it tomorrow. Day job starts early.

According to Rasiel Suarez, in the AORTA book. A lot of Gallienus coins are of very low quality even as they left the mint. That's either a small flan or the edge deteriorated over time, I believe. According to the book, for every coin of decent quality, there is a cartload of deplorable coins. Although, it is said that many Antoninianus in the early years of his rule are usually of decent quality. You can find acceptable quality coins for under $20 on ebay.

This is one of my coins. I think the flan is of poor quality and probably deteriorated over the centuries of time.

I agree:RIC 266 Divus Claudius II Gothicus AE Antoninianus. DIVO CLAVDIO, radiate head right / CONSECRATIO, eagle standing facing with head right or left. RIC 266, Cohen 43; Sear 11459 Here is a similar barbarous overcoated in ren wax:

since we are on the subject of gallienus zoo animals here are a couple of my coins with centaur, and pegasus reverses. I had posted these before. I think they are nice examples. The pegasus is one of my examples on wildwinds. Again these coins are waxed a little too much where it hides the details and gives the coin a dull look.

Reniassance wax helps preserve the coin, keeping it from oxidizing with chemicals in the environment/air.

I have ren wax myself and I understand its properties. I was just adding a little humor to the subject because of bad shape of my particular Claudius. But I appreciate your help jessvc1, your a wealth of information, as so many members of this forum. Regards.

I think it it hard to use too little Ren Wax since I have spent more effort removing excess (or is it floor polish?) applied by someone before I got the coin. I have never owned a bottle.
