Yeah, I have definitely got to get me some acetone one of these days. I've got a couple of Morgans with green gunk on them that are just begging to be treated.

Mom used to say if you frowned too much, your face would crack.
This grim pill cracked clean down at his elbow.

Yeah, I noticed that. Is that a die crack or the result of the aforementioned "harsh cleaning"? If the former, does it add or detract from the value?

Honestly, the Pilgrim does not appear harshly cleaned to me based on the picture. Sometimes coins will tone around protected areas near the rim - or sometimes a coin is lightly wiped and that toning remains. Hard to tell but I don't see hairlines from a scrubbing so it could be natural toning.
The pattern on the reverse towards the top has the look of a light fingerprint to me.
Again, just one other opinion.

Thanks for the link, Jeff!
Now, if only I could figure out whether the coin has or has not been harshly cleaned...

It doesn't look like cleaning. Some people get all ga-ga over diecracks, others don't.
I'd say overall, it would detract for more buyers than not.

Allow me to clarify my prior remarks ...
This coin IMHO does not exhibit original mint surfaces ... I believe by the photos that it has been cleaned ... perhaps the photos are fooling my eye?
The photos show an obverse portrait of Governor Bradford that is way bright ... the fields are muted ... and the rim legends are toned.
To me ... those are the signs of a cleaning ... and if the photos are accurate ... a tough one indeed.
I may be wrong ... just expressing an opinion in the support of all of us.
Agreed that this is a lovely piece of USA coinage history ... and at the end-of-the-day Barry needs to be happy with it ... not us.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out it was cleaned, Dave. It was the "harsh" bit that maybe people were taking issue with. To me, there is a big difference between a simple dip and scouring it with a wire brush...

Agreed Barry ... apologize as needed for my poor 'harsh' word selection ... hoping my recent post clarified my true views. Let's refocus this thread on your wonderful 7070 accomplishment ... I stated earlier and I repeat again that you have pulled together a lovely set ... Our goal here ... and certainly mine ... is to offer support and input ... Share any and all commemorative with us in this sub-forum ... we'll do our best to offer honest views based upon our limited experience. Honestly ... thrilled that you are even considering classic silver for those four slots. David

Quote: So which ones did you finally end up with, Bryan (and why)? I started going with the classic designs that had an eagle on them to replace the Moderns. I have Texas, Stone Mountain, and Arkansas. The last one (I haven't gotten yet) is going to be the Roanoke even though it doesn't have an eagle on nit, I live in NC and have to add this one to the album the same way I had to add the NC State Quarter

Quote: "You can't take the TarHeel out of the man" Wouldn't you rather take the tar off the heel of a man? I have the SC quarter in my 7070. Not because I live in SC (I am not originally from SC), but because it is where my son was born. I have the Columbian Commemorative in the first slot. The last two are the uncirculated and proof versions of the 1982 Washington Commemorative that I bought from direct from the mint. The last (second) hole is open. I have gone back and forth a few times on what coin I will put there, but have not made a firm decision yet.

w00t! As I hoped, my Lexington-Concord just arrived in the mail: And the first person who tells me it has obviously been harshly cleaned, dipped, polished or spoken to, so help me...
