I don't know if there is any hope for this one. I just got to see if I could clean it. I didn't pay much for it.

But someone waxed it heavily over the dirt and it doesn't want to come off now.

I couldn't tell it was waxed from the sellers pics, or they waxed it just before mailing it.

Anyway, any guesses who's under the dirt?

I'm pretty sure its SALVS on the left of rev. with SC in ex.

I have a couple of possible candidates.

I don't think it looks like a Vespasian (not fat enough in the face). I do think you are correct about the reverse. You have the coin in hand. What are your guesses. That may give us a starting point. Also weight and size please.

Compare to the above link results. I'd say 90% Vespasian, 4% Titus, 1% anything else.

I can just barely make out SALVS on the reverse. I think it just might be Domitian.

33mm, 16.0 grams (a bit light)?

At first I thought the elbow on the rev. was bent with forearm resting forward which made me look toward Trajan, Maximinus and Gordian III.

But on cleaning a little the elbow is bent with forearm raised holding a staff.I'm soaking it now, we'll see what happens.

Thanks

With the weight known it doesn't quite match up to a dupondius (heavy), or a sestertius (light), but the color is good for both. Looks like a laureate head, not a radiate head.

Could it be a Roman colonial with a Latin legend?
