Yeah...I know that nickels were never minted at Carson City and I know the Forum has an ebay section that this post might be more suited for (and if the mods move it, that's fine) but I thought it might get more readership here and therefore be of more benefit to the members...especially if you sell on ebay. It seems that when you make a new coin listing on ebay, some of the "item-specific" fields are PRE-FILLED for you, such as the mint location (CC), the conditon (UNC) and the TPG (ANACS). This has apparently led (when I looked a few minutes ago) to 1698 nickels being listed that have an "item-specific" mint location of "CC"! If you're a seller, beware of this trap. Make sure you change the item-specics to the appropriate choice for your coin! Edited by weerdsteev 01/13/2012 11:17 am

Yep, I have missed a step every once in a while and (let's say that I) listed a Morgan dollar in it's proper category, and then list a Peace dollar next, skipping the category and it gets listed in the Morgan section. It would probably not get as good of coverage or bids in the wrong category.

Well...that's not quite the same thing. I've fallen into the trap you spoke of, but this seems different. If you use their "sell similar" option to copy information from one listing to the other and you forget to change Peace to Morgan or Mercury to Roosevelt, that's what'll happen. But this thing I'm speaking of is a relatively new development (I think) where if you start in FRESH on a brand new listing...it has those fields PRE-FILLED. Why would they assume those things on a new (not copied over) listing? Think about this from the perspective of an ebay newbie selling his first ever coin...say...a 1938-D Buffalo nickel. It's gonna have CC, UNC and ANACS pre-filled. Pretty good chance the newb will miss it and let it go through just like that.

It's pretty frustrating trying to pull data from ebay on ANACS slabs; 50% of the coins noted as ANACS are from this silly "default" mistake.

I'm (now) picking up what you are throwing down Steve! It's the default (thanks ContraJame) (alphabetic?) drop-downs.

Default...yeah...thanks! And you don't have to be a newb to fall into the trap. We have a member in our midst who has been selling on ebay for a while now and all 30 of the Buffalo nickels he listed yesterday have item specifics that say "CC", "UNC" and "ANACS".

I'm sorry - I'm not laughing at this person, I'm laughing with him - but I'm laughing all the same.

I listed a ton of items yesterday and ran into the same situation. It makes no sense to have the default settings as uncirculated, certified, and carson city. Its a situation ripe for disaster

Yeah, I posted about this in another thread...it keeps filling in random information. I had to change a lot of my listings for fear that some petty buyer would ding my stars over it.

I gotta say...this is totally annoying and stupid! I thought that I was going to be immune from this because normally all I do is copy over the same listing I've been using for 3 years and just change the dates and the photos.
Nope!
I have to remove the ANACS certification and other non-applicable stuff on EVERY coin I list. I did NOT have this problem last week, so this must be a very, very new change. I hope their switchboards are lighting up and they fix it....soon!
(And no, the member I referred to back near the beginning of this thread, who messed up a bunch of his listings, is NOT me!)

Call ebay and complain to them about it, I did that and he said he'd report it to the technical department. He also said it was being taken seriously because it is recognized as a serious design flaw/issue for non-retail sellers.

Steve...also beware, if you post Buffalo nickels, it will automatically fill in the information and say its 'Acid Treated'. I'm posting this because I know you sell them.
