I had the opportunity to go home this weekend and stopped at 2 local coin shops. I got this from the first shop I went to. I went through a bag of his Barber coins that he just got in the shop and bought a few of them. Then I seen this wore out dirty Seated quarter in the display case, so I asked him how much he wanted. He grabbed it up, looked at it and said $10 bucks. I said ok. It Looked neat and it wasnt over priced. Anyways, I suppose its one of those re engraved dies, and I think they did a really poor job. The reverse letters look double died and theres other LOUD errors on this coin. I suppose the die was about to be tossed. The wear on the coin is uneven too. Just wanted to share it so others could see.
On the Reverse the letters F AMERICA and QUAR.DOL. appear double die. And the first Dot after QUAR has 2 mini dots beside it. One on each side. (or mabey its just a bad R. and .D) Inside the Q AR the letters appear to be filled in. And check out the E in America. It has a V cut into it...Some of the rays also look redone.
On the Obverse the 2 stars on the right side also appear doubled but I didnt bother trying to shoot a pic of them.
Tried to scan the coin but it didnt show the details well enough so I tried to take pictures with my cellphone and a loop on the end. So sorry for the pics in advance.
Its a neat collector piece at the least. Anyone else have this variety?

Step 1 is a soak in distilled water, followed by acetone if necessary, to get the obverse down to the coin. That's not tarnish, looks more like cola. Otherwise, a solid G coin.

And the 1853 Seated coins (quarters & halves) w/rays have always had problems with die cracks, chips, lots were in terminal state. The rays compromised the die to the point where they would deteriorate frequently.
